Kate Waters suffers from narcoleptic hallucinations involving her sister, JEV, and a mysterious key, which is later found at the scene of Jev’s fatal car accident. Though the funeral director, Adam, attempts to soothe Kate, she feels hollowed and alone. When Kate learns about an argument between Jev and her boyfriend, Sean, who is also her coworker at the Pacific NW Geological Survey, and then discovers witchcraft supplies in Jev’s home, Kate wonders if Jev had been in trouble.
Just as the local volcano stirs, conflict erupts at home between Kate and her boyfriend, David, regarding paranormal occurrences he believes to be Jev’s presence. Kate seeks counsel from Detective Wells, who investigated Jev’s accident. He urges her to cancel her trip to Mt. Hood with Sean, but she can’t afford to let someone else lead the expedition. An avalanche on the mountain tests Sean’s innocence, but Kate’s accusations insulted him, and he blames a witch named Thea for Jev’s troubles.
Kate visits an occult shop where one of Jev’s friends, Donna, works. She learns Thea has been mingling in black magic since the sudden death of her dog. Donna urges Kate to wear a protection bracelet, which may have saved her from a run-in with a black truck. Knowing she is in real danger, Kate meets Thea, who gives her a book containing a hidden message that takes Kate to a graveyard where Jev had inexplicably written down the numbers to seven grave bins.
After more tire treads are found, Wells reopens Jev’s case and concludes foul play was involved in the accident. The next day, police investigate a fire at Donna’s apartment where they find her half-dead at the bottom of a stairwell. Wells wants Kate to stay with someone else, but she doesn’t want to put anyone else in danger, until a terrifying event with ghosts forces Kate to turn to Thea. She convinces Kate to perform a protection spell, which is interrupted when Kate sees the wolf from the mountain and her visions.
David calls Kate and asks her to meet him at the cemetery—he believes Jev’s mysterious key belongs to a crypt. They separate and Kate discovers the graves belong to the ghosts she had seen earlier. Kate encounters the funeral director, Adam, but he is not who she thinks he is. Adam has been stealing valuables from the grave bins and stowing them in a crypt. With nothing left to lose, Kate enacts the protection spell. The wolf stalking her emerges from the woods and kills Adam.
Two months later, in a new home with David, Kate receives a package from the Portland Police Department containing the last of Jev’s belongings. One of the items reveals a shocking story—Jev’s binding spell was meant for Sean. He was the one who poisoned Thea’s dog. Having come to terms with her sister’s witchcraft, Kate knows the best way to honor her sister is to complete her binding spell and unearth Jev once again.
