David Chou has been carefully selected to
captain a mission into space that could potentially save the human race.
But will there be anything left to save?
In The
Last Astronaut, the year is 2250 and tensions are growing among the people of
Earth as the rich live in beautiful homes behind locked gates and high walls
and the rest of the citizenry are left to roam the streets. With the
future of Earth in a questionable state, some of the most brilliant minds at
the Global Space Agency have taken on a secret mission to find planets that can
support life and provide a new home for humanity.
Author D.F. Marrs explores the consequences of a
future in which we have neglected our world and made irresponsible
choices. What would our options be? Would the human race cease to
exist? Would we persevere? Would we change the way we are living
now if we could see our future?
Marrs achieves this in-depth exploration by
connecting readers to the lives of several different characters in different
periods of time, from the simpler pre-2250 days to the Thallia people living light-years
from Earth. In each case, the story becomes more and more layered and
complex, yet still relatable to a 2012 audience. Even the robot
characters exhibit a certain sophistication while still remaining quite
endearing.
The Last
Astronaut is rich
with detail and benefits greatly from incredibly well done research on the
topics of human nature, globalization, and space travel. Many of the
advanced technologies discussed will be recognizable to readers, while others
will be like new discoveries, created from the mind of the author. The
writing is so smooth it feels as if the book wrote itself and the story is
wonderfully engaging.
Readers will likely enjoy Marrs’ interpretation
of what first contact with alien life looks like and be very surprised at the
way this particular alien race has chosen to live.
The Last
Astronaut creates a clear picture of what the future of Earth might look
like and successfully explores what could become of the human race in a
detailed, relatable story with complex characters, alternate worlds, and an
exciting quest through time.
