Synopsis
The Picture of Music teaches children and adults how to read music
without naming notes. The reader is taught
how to see music as a picture that is paralleled by the piano keyboard. The student is therefore asked to have either
an acoustic piano or a keyboard available while progressing through the book. The book is spiral bound, resting comfortably
on the music stand.
Great care was taken to
insure that this introduction to reading music be completely non-threatening
and light, while remaining theoretically sound, without gimmicks. Because of this, the book is appropriate for
three audiences: The parent who seeks to
reveal the delightful world of reading music to his or her child; the adult who
is determined to learn how to read music; and the adult who may have been
previously traumatized by harsh music teaching methods as a child, but still longs for personal expression through
music.
The book contains over
300 whimsical illustrations - intended to accompany the reader - as the
inherent simplicity of written music is gently revealed. By the end of the book, the student will have
a basic knowledge of music theory, and be capable of reading simple music on
white keys as a foundation for the next level.

About the Author
I live in Ely, Nevada
with my husband and several rescued animals.
I wanted to write this book for 20 years: During that period of time, I became aware of
a litany of friends and acquaintances that were afraid of reading music. Some had taken music lessons as a child and
hated that experience; others thought that reading music was a skill reserved
for those who have an innate gift and ability to decipher complicated symbols
on a page. Even more had thrown up their
hands and withdrawn their children from piano lessons because they “couldn’t
get it.” This method makes it easy to
“get it.”
I studied music and
teaching under Lana Bodnar after graduating with a B.A. in Literature and a
minor in Theology from Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Through Lana, I was eventually blessed with
the opportunity to share her system with my own students. I found that even three-year-olds - after
grasping the visual principles in the book - were able to read music quickly
and effortlessly. There was no struggle
in the process, because the method simply showed them how to open their eyes
and see the music as a picture.
May this book give you a
vision of your potential to realize - in a new and fresh way - the wonderful
world of music! The book teaches children and adults how to read music without naming notes. The reader is taught how to see music as a picture and a shape, which is paralleled on the piano keyboard. The book contains over 300 whimsical illustrations.
