Book Review

Roger Legion, owner of the insurance defense law firm, Legion & Associates, was rarely disturbed by any action or event. With years of experience as a lawyer and negotiator, he had developed a keen sense of intuition regarding people’s motives and goals; this served him well in such a competitive profession. However, he never expected a betrayal from among his own, those lawyers whom he considered to be not only associates but also sons.

The firm’s involvement in the defense of a company puts it in the middle of an ongoing feud between an aged gangster and an upstart, psychotic Mexican drug runner. When Legion refuses to take on the defense of the front company for the cartel, he is squarely placed in the center of the fight as the cartel hires men to kill Legion and his entire firm. These outside threats, though, are rivaled by those from within; as the original case progresses, Legion becomes aware of the possible collusion of one of his employees with his opponents and must investigate to find the mole.

Normally unflappable even in the face of such attacks, Legion soon faces the worst possible threat, that on his family. With the help of experts in defense and security, he must track down the criminals before it is too late, endangering his own life in the process. And finally, the lawyers in the firm will soon discover the extent of Legion’s determination as he uncovers the extent of their betrayal, a weakness that cannot be redeemed in his eyes.

In Legion’s Lawyers, Vince Aiello provides readers with a fast-paced thriller that will be sure to entertain. Aiello, a lawyer as well as author by profession, brings his experience to his writing of this novel. Indeed, the details of the law and its various intricacies are quite prominent in the novel itself. However, even the most casual reader will be able to enjoy this work of fiction. Aiello includes the right amount of exposition for unfamiliar lingo or terms while focusing on the main action of the storyline. Considering this, the novel is definitely a “fast read” with its intrigue, violence, and quick pacing. Aiello deftly weaves numerous plot elements into a well-crafted and enjoyable thriller.

Terminology and tricks-of-the-trade are not the only details of the law profession provided in the novel.  Through character description and development, Aiello gives readers a glimpse of what makes certain lawyers successful, including their dress, philosophy, and comportment. This is an interesting aspect of the novel and provides the reader with a greater depth of understanding of characters like Legion and their real-life counterparts. Legion, however, is more multifaceted than simply that encompassed by his lawyer ethos, all of which makes this work more interesting for a wider-range of readers.

With its quick plot pacing, surprising action, and thoughtful character development, Vince Aiello’s Legion’s Lawyers will surely provide hours of entertainment for readers who love law-based thrillers. This novel is quite graphic, and so it would be most appropriate for adult readers who enjoy that aspect of the genre. All in all, Legion’s Lawyers is an enjoyable, well-written novel that provides a thought-provoking glimpse into the legal profession.
