We know the definition of ‘momentous’ as being an event or decision of great importance, especially having its bearing on the future. Author and poet Abhijit Das has created a collection of his poetry titled Momentous Thoughts; revealing how each poem holds great importance to him. In his desire to share his most personal thoughts, Abhijit Das writes on topics of freedom, love, honor and God, with an iambic beat and rhyme classic to much in the poetry genre.

The book is dedicated to his wife Papri Das, who he claims inspired him to write poetry. The pink cover gives the book a feminine tone, honoring his wife as well. The breath of subjects within showcase the chivalrous wisdom of a man who has experienced the trials and tribulations of life, coming to a point of retroactive reflection. The author often brings the bird into the poem as a symbol of freedom; in fact one poem is dedicated to this winged personification of the free spirit.

Readers can sense Abhijit Das is fluent in more than just English; as the correlation of thoughts in his mind at times seems as if he is reaching out for the proper English word to fit into the prose. Using poetic license at a minimum, the pattern is brought together many times seamlessly. In some poems he begins with the same word, offering each line of prose an altered definition. Although any collection of over two score of work is challenging, Das creates a tone while reading his poetry, one can fall into a relaxed state of agreement with what is being read, as there is certainly no conflict attesting to the values held by the author/poet.

Momentous Thoughts is a collection which can be opened, put down, re-opened at any page, offering a companion book while traveling, or in a waiting room, or on a bedside nightstand. As I read this book in the electronic version, I believe it is best to get this as a printed book. This way it would be easily opened time after time, without the retrieving of a file and scrolling to the poems – opening it to a page, any page, and to begin reading the poems would be the best way to enjoy this work. Beautifully laid out with generously spaced galley text, Momentous Thoughts would also make an ideal gift for a man to give to a loved one – just how Abhijit gave it to Papri.
