Quasar is a hilarious collection of stories by author Uncle Mike. The thin collection of short stories and poems shed light on life, love, sex and more. Quasar takes place in a bar in New Orleans, where elderly, ornery patrons clash with LGBT patrons that frequent the bar. In separate, but interlocking stories, two patrons, Al and Henry try to prove a specious theory about homosexuality with disastrous results, all this while a drag queen holds court in the bar. In another connected story, a voluptuous waitress, Valerie, is courted by male patrons, but finds more in common with a female patron, Betty. The Quasar stories are followed by another tale about a boy named Johnny who wonders about the universe in his small town in “To Be or Not to Be.” At the end there are poems about quasars, followed by another short story about Native Americans welcoming Pilgrims in the first Thanksgiving in “Pilgrim’s Day.”
Uncle Mike pens an outrageous collection of stories that are funny and definitely not politically correct. His unique take on being gay in modern times are not for the faint of heart or easily offended. The other short stories about the Environmental Protection Agency being ineffective are also unusual political satire. New Orleans is presented as a town that extends southern hospitality to people of different sexualities, but still has some old-fashioned beliefs that clash with that welcoming exterior.
Throughout the book are controversial jokes which may be offensive, but are funny. His writing is sharp, incisive, and farcical all at the same time. While the book has a mostly light tone, the cheeky humor of Quasar is mixed well with the introspective poetry about the universe at the end of the collection.
This book is best for readers who like un-PC humor from no-holds-barred comedians similar to Bill Maher or Dave Chappelle. The collection of stories would be a great addition to a reader’s library of short stories or humorous books. Uncle Mike’s collection of stories is excellent for readers who want an amalgam of silly and serious. If readers are looking for outlandish humor, but also want short stories that reference Shakespeare, Quasar is the perfect book.
Uncle Mike has written a collection of stories that are a short, and a fun read. Quasar is a book that is small in pages, but will give readers a really big laugh.
