No person is safe from the murderous actions of Nazi Germany SS soldiers or their commander Adolf Hitler, especially the ordinary people of London. As the German forces began to confront the British defenses, change was inevitable, filtering its way down to those of a typical hardworking family like the Groves.

John, his wife Mary, and their two twin children enjoyed the simple life they shared together. Mary was working as a nurse at the local hospital, John as a self-employed carpenter and the twins working their own jobs as well. Their normal lives changed so suddenly with one knock at the door, as one of Hitler’s Top Ranking Generals, General Ludwig Von Klaus stepped through their family threshold. What could one of the Top Ranking Generals want with the Groves, a normal, hardworking, quiet family of England?

The Film, written by George Amos, is a historical fiction novel containing both fictional and factual occurrences and events, names, places during the years of World War I and World War II; focusing more on World War II and Nazi Germany’s involvement in England, Russia, and France. The author does an incredible job not dwelling too much on just the military view of the war, thus allowing readers to imagine what it was like for common non-Jewish citizens of both Germany and England during the war. Often books of World War II focus on a viewpoint from Germany or America. Having an English protagonist was both enlightening and refreshing. The overall characters and plot of the book are very well written, skillfully presented and thoughtfully developed. Author George Amos also focused on the importance of trust within families and friends, even if those friends are of a different ethnicity. The bond between friends can be lifesaving, as George Amos has brilliantly inferred within The Film.

Being an avid reader of historical and historical fictions books, this book soars into my top few Historical Fiction World War II novels. I certainly recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction novels about the Second World War, Germany, Hitler, or even friendship.
