In The Journey of My Life, author Eugene McCann explores his life so far and the spiritual journey he’s been on. I would group this particular novel with books such as Wild and The Glass Castle.  Although these books are all vastly different, they’re all memoirs which explore a person’s life while they’re going through mental, physical, or spiritual journeys.

This is a great memoir for anyone to read, especially people who are interested in spiritual stories. McCann was able to vividly describe scenes and events, making it easy to imagine while reading. Although most of his writing was factual and straightforward, some passages were beautifully written, almost as if they were written by a poet.

The book is written in a diary format, starting in mid-2012. By using this format, McCann allows readers an intimate look into his daily life. Readers get to see how he usually spends his days and what he’s contemplating at the time. I really enjoyed the tidbits about his wife, Deanna. Readers could just tell how much he loves her, which puts a smile on your face. Also, we get to see him talking personally to God through his writing. He asks for peace and for forgiveness multiple times throughout the book, while he is on his journey to righteousness.

The book ends in late-2014. It’s a very heartwarming ending with McCann writing about how he’s preparing to send his manuscript into his publisher. After reading through all of his trial and tribulations, it’s wonderful to see something positive happening in his life. It’s made even more heartwarming when you realize that sending it to publishers worked, as his book was obviously published.

The book is a quick and easy read, perfect to read by the fire during a chilly, autumn weekend. McCann is a likable and relatable person, making him interesting to read about. The stories he told are engaging and make you feel an entire range of emotions, from happiness to sadness. The Journey of My Life is a very easy book to get immersed into. Personally, it made me consider aspects of my life which I wasn’t considering before. Reading this book takes you on your own journey, while you read about McCann’s journey.

I think anyone who is a fan of memoirs would thoroughly enjoy this book. Additionally, if you don’t normally read memoirs, this is a great one to start with.  For a book to change your way of thinking about your own life while reading about another’s, is all about the magic of literature.
