George Lucas once said, “I’ve come to the conclusion that mythology is really a form of archaeological psychology. Mythology gives you a sense of what people believe, what they fear.” In author Leo Cauzillo’s book They Are Not Alone: Mythology Or History, a surprising twist on science fiction gets a mythological treatment as an advanced civilization discovers and communicates with ancient civilizations.

In this story, Dr. A’Pal Chi is a skilled mathematician who becomes an explorer when he leads a crew into the unknown, after discovering a new mathematical formula. With his planet doomed, he joins a program that blends the study of mathematics, science, history, mythology and religion to discover the unknown and lost civilizations of the past. However things take an interesting turn as Chi leads the discovery of Earth and its ancient civilizations, and begins a new twist on humanity’s history and ancient mythologies of their own.

This was a very unique story. A very technical, advanced and specific integration of mathematics and science into the more fantastic elements of the story, the author does a great job of making this story feel believable. Unlike most stories that spend the first hundred pages or so building up the history of a new race of beings, readers are thrust into the narrative as if Dr. A’Pal Chi’s people are already known to them. It makes the book flow smoothly in a way in which not all science fiction or mythological tales do.

This is definitely a book for anyone who loves math or science, enjoys delving into the various theories regarding humanity’s myths and legends, and the impact those myths had on our own history. This is also the perfect read for anyone who truly enjoys sci-fi, as this reviewer does. As someone who loves the genre and mythology as a whole, it was unique and fascinating to see the author’s creativity shine through in a retelling of Earth history and human mythology over the course of our civilization.

This is a phenomenal read that both surprised and entertained this reviewer. Exploring the rise of superior technology and shaping it to fit into the way humanity and cultures viewed the myths that grew within their civilizations, it was the perfect blend of the past meeting the future in a totally original way, and is something readers will easily fall in love with.
