Book Review

A smartly crafted continuation of the Galadria Young Adult Fantasy trilogy, Galadria: Book 2 Peter Huddleston and The Mists of the Three Lakes continues the fantastical story of Peter’s Huddleston’s adventures as the newly crowned prince of the golden realm of Galadria.  As the second book in the Galadria Trilogy, author Miguel Lopez de Leon successfully brings readers up to speed within the life of Peter Huddleston, now a year older somewhat wiser and growing more confident.

Another school year done, Peter remains victimized by his stepmother’s relentless torrent of bizarre antics and accusations.  Eager to escape, he longs to go back to the sprawling and wondrous Hillside Manor to leave behind his harassed, droll life and continue his training as crown prince, surrounded by people who love and respect him.  Also at play are subtle changes in his father’s behavior that indicate changes for the better on the horizon within his family dynamics.  It appears that his father may actually be snapping out of his depressed fugue and become more attentive to Peter.

Excited and overjoyed by his arrival back at Hillside Manor Peter resumes his training for his role as crown prince but there is a growing undercurrent of ominous activities building, which could have severe consequences to Peter and all of Galadria if actualized.  Meanwhile as Peter becomes more deeply entrenched with his princely duties, he learns much more of his family legacy and the innermost workings of the Galadrian realm – especially the importance of the mysterious Mists of the Three Lakes.  He also meets the Galadrian media and finally gets to cross over to the golden realm for the first time so that he and the people Galadria can begin to relate on a more personal level.  However not to be outdone, an old enemy resurfaces stronger than ever accompanied by an army willing to destroy everyone involved with the Willowbrook legacy – including prince Peter.

I enjoyed this continuation of the mystical world of young Peter Huddleston; he is a young, lovable, brave, and a resolute character that I found to be reasonably relatable.  The fantastical imagination of the author really shines throughout this book, saturated with amazingly imaginative flora, fauna, elements, and ideals, which he consistently and vividly brings to life.  Additionally, author Miguel Lopez de Leon adeptly manages the continuity of the story, which is so important to maintain in any series of books as readers, should be able to catch up and easily segue to the next part.  Also, the story remains consistently well paced while it grows a building intensity that keeps things engaging and entertaining.  I recommend reading this second installment in the Galadria Trilogy and look forward to reading the third and final installment of this exciting and creative fantasy series.
