Author Mia Henry’s novel, A Mother’s Sin, is a riveting, engaging story, bringing family drama to the forefront in a touching and moving way which readers will absolutely love. The novel focuses on two South African siblings, Ella and Richard, whose world is destroyed when a former model, Amber, marries Richard. Amber’s constant drug use threatens the safety of her children and ruins her marriage to Richard. In addition to that drama, Ella has to endure the untimely deaths of most of her young children. Despite these tragedies, Ella learns to cope with the pain, along with the help of her surviving family and her own inner perseverance.

A Mother’s Sin has relatable characters throughout the novel. Ella is a sympathetic protagonist which readers will empathize with as she endures unspeakable traumas in her life. She is a very caring woman who loves Amber and Richard’s children as their own, even when Amber is unable to take care of them. Amber is the perfect villain as the selfish, irresponsible addict that destroys the fragile peace of Ella’s family as well as her own.

Mia Henry’s writing is based on true events as she writes about heartbreaking situations like miscarriage and addiction with eloquent sensitivity. While the book does deal with heavy topics, there is still love and lightness in A Mother’s Sin. The interactions between Ella and her nieces and nephew, as she cares for them, are sincerely heartwarming. The book offers lessons on how to live life to the fullest as Ella also is devoted to her special needs daughter, Tammy. Even though Tammy suffers from physical ailments, she is a tough and strong young lady who doesn’t let adversity get her down.

This book is great for readers who like emotional fiction with strong female characters. A Mother’s Sin is perfect for fans of tearjerker classics like Larry McMurtry’s Terms of Endearment or modern books like Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper. While the novel could fall under the label “chick lit,” A Mother’s Sin is a book which is about more than simply melodrama. The novel is laden with astute observations about family, forgiveness and love that transcend the narrow label of the genre.

This book would also be helpful for readers who are struggling with challenges in life, such as described above. It could be therapeutic in the recovery of addictions and an inspiration dealing with the loss of children, as well as building the strength and patience for caring for the special needs child. The inspiring message of A Mother’s Sin would be essential to readers who want to gain the strength of hope in their reading material. Mia Henry’s debut novel is a dramatic and inspiring book which enlightens as it entertain readers.
