Today we’re talking with Miguel De Leon, author of “Carry the Knight”.

  1. PBR:  According to your website, http://www.miguellopezdeleon.com/, you have quite an impressive academic background. Equally impressive are your literary accomplishments in short stories and 2010 contest winner of the Writer’s Digest Magazine. How old were you when you decided that you wanted to become an author?

I was in my late 20’s when I seriously thought of writing as a profession. Up until then it was a hobby.

  1. PBR:  Can you tell a little more about yourself that you haven’t already mentioned on your website?

Well…I love to cook, collect vintage comic books, and am one of the newest fans of “Game of Thrones”…awesome show!

  1. PBR:  If you were to name literary influences in your life, who would they be?

Definitely JK Rowling, she not only inspired an entire generation to read again, but she made it cool and fun.

  1. PBR:  Carry the Knight is the first of two fantasy novellas written for young adults. What do you find appealing about writing for this age group?

I just find this age group as a very transitional one in most people’s lives, so their is a lot of subject matter one can focus on.

  1. PBR:  Each of the chapters has a one-word alliterated title that curiously begins with the letter D. This must have been a challenge. What inspired you to create this type of format?

I honestly just did this on a whim and thought it would be interesting. But yes, it was a fun challenge!

  1. PBR:  Eonie is Jeremy’s guardian. How did you come up with such an unusual name?

I actually have a friend named “Eonie,”and she is a very protective friend, so it was all very natural.

  1. PBR:  At the top of your list of malevolent characters is the Reets. Where did you get the idea to create such interesting creatures, not to mention their name?

I honestly just made them up. I thought they were interesting and dangerous characters that were also very engaging.

  1. PBR:  What made you choose creating novellas over novels?

Well, in my Galadria Fantasy Book Trilogy, I had already written a trio of novels. Now, I wanted to create a different set of books that were more of a quick read and more affordable.

  1. PBR:  Do you foresee writing more novels in the near future?

Absolutely! Lots of action, magic and adventure awaits!

  1. PBR:  Do you foresee earmarking your books only for young adults, or branching out to older adult readers?

I really do feel that the books I’ve written are for any age group (except for the extremely young of course).

  1. PBR:  Fantasy, indeed, appears to be your forte. However, do you have any intensions of writing for any other genres sometime in the future?

Not really. I enjoy using my imagination to create fantasy worlds, and I think that is best expressed in this genre.

  1. PBR:  If you had to sum up in one word an adjective that best describes your abilities as an author, what word would that be?

“Perseverant.”
