In a fast-paced, social media obsessed world, it can feel impossible to make a personal, human connection. No matter what age, from the young to old, we are increasingly having trouble connecting with others. Dr. Paul Carlo’s book, Belonging: Feeling Loved, Comfortable, and Safe is an answer to that problem. As a psychotherapist, Dr. Carlo has used his wealth of experience and knowledge from his private practice to research and writing this book.

Divided by helpful chapters with headings like “What Science Teaches Us About The Need For Connection”, Dr. Carlo explains to the reader on both a scientific and intimate level what humans need in a relationship to feel loved and comfortable. While he starts off each chapter with a more academic approach to explaining why we do what we do, he then uses real-world, relatable answers to make it understandable for the laymen.

The book is written in a clear and concise manner that helps underscore his points and it will leave the reader with actionable steps to take in his or her life to feel less alone and isolated. The last chapter on disconnecting was one of the most effective chapters as it’s one of the hardest things for people to do but also, one of the most important.

All in all, Belonging is a book important for all age groups to read. Dr. Carlo’s insights are valuable and can do a lot of good. This book, living its wisdom, can change the world one person at a time. Belonging is a book that I will read over and over. As I believe every time I read it I will glean something new depending on the season I am in in my life.
