The novel My Life as a Scientist and the Spiritual Connection starts off by reminding us how complex the universe truly is. From the smallest atom to the largest constellation among the stars, our universe is full of wonder. Many of these wondrous things are things that we can touch, see, and study. When we look up at the night sky, we can see the stars and estimate how many there are. We can send probes into space to collect data and take photos. We learn about stars and the solar system in school. But, there’s a need within some of us for something else in our universe – a higher power. There are many theories that have been circulating around for ages, from the son of God being born to a teenage virgin to a prophet who spread teachings of Zen living. However, unlike most things, we cannot prove there is a higher power. We cannot collect data, nor take pictures.

Science is based on fact. Due to this, many scientists don’t believe in a higher power. But what happens when a man of science, who works in the world of facts and figures, believes in a higher power anyway? In My Life as a Scientist and the Spiritual Connection, author Maurice N. Karkar, Ph.D, writes about his life and how a spiritualist affected it. From his academic career to his living situations, the author vividly reflects on how his spiritualist was involved in nearly every aspect of his life. He goes into great detail to explain his life and the lessons he learned along the way.

Even though he’s a doctor and a scientist, the author writes with the wit and imagery of an artist. When he writes about his days in college, you feel like you’ve been transported back in time, walking around and experiencing it alongside him. Through every story he recounts, you feel as if you are watching it play on a projector in your head. Fans of any genre will appreciate this book, for it is as full of passion, wit, and excitement as any action or drama book. While reading the book, you may start to think about your own beliefs and how they shaped your life. Did they shape your life for the better or for the worse? No matter what, Maurice N. Karkar, Ph.D, can attest that our beliefs can affect our lives. What we believe in can choose our path for us, just sending us off without a compass or map.
