In Lots of Luck Noblesse Oblige Rentier, author Ron Matejka takes readers on a journey of two love birds who grew up together and later went separate ways, only to discover an undeniable reality that was webbed deeply inside their souls decades later.

Staff Sergeant Dan Mastik is flying back home in the company of four flag-draped shipping cases of soldiers who haven’t been lucky enough to return from their last deployment alive. He is forty-five years old and has been considering leaving the military and putting up a foundation to help others. His first task as a civilian is an absolute fascination: he plans to reach out to his first love, Sophie Sandori, a woman who gave him two special gifts that he’s kept with him for over twenty-five years: a beaded key chain and memories of a breathtaking first kiss.

Dan’s first stop is at a hotel where his former high school buddies are having a reunion party. Shockingly, upon arrival, his eyes quickly fall on the familiar face of his first love, who is caught up in a blazing romantic moment with a handsome young man who he presumes is her husband, owing to the huge diamond ring on her left hand. He immediately takes his leave in dismay and regret, wondering why he never saw that coming. The episode lingers in his mind for some time, but unbeknownst to him, seeing her may just have flared up all the underlying but indubitable emotions in his soul.

In this book, the author has put forward mind-blowing twists and turns that effectively subvert the readers’ expectations. He cleverly introduces a previous partner who is eager for reconciliation with one of the protagonists, which, among other unforeseen developments, raises the stakes higher as the story deepens. Readers will love his brilliance and creativity in the illustration of military combat in the first pages, as well as the deeply satisfying closure at the end which reveals an honest and truthful fact regarding the power of true love.

Lots of Luck Noblesse Oblige Rentier is a straightforward read that, though based on the simple ideation of a teenager’s first kiss, leads to a mind-stirring fairytale moment which will leave readers thrilled and looking at their dreams and aspirations differently. It is inspired by real-life events and offers an escapism after a busy day. I Highly recommend this to all readers who enjoy a romantic story with superb characters, and of course might remember their own high-school first kiss.
