Promise Terrene was born to the most powerful people in the most powerful section of the world. She lives in a place where your power defines who you are and your destiny. The world is hers, she can do whatever she wants. She is beyond special that is until she gets powers of her own. But what happens next is the last thing she expected, the last thing anyone expected. Promise has to learn how to survive in a world where nothing is guaranteed to happen her way, no future is promised and she doesn’t know what to do next. She must learn how to live in a world that is not friendly to those who lack power.

From the very beginning, Powerless by author Shelley Miller is an entertaining and fast paced read. As readers are introduced to Promise, they are given an image of a spoiled princess who sees herself as above those around her. As the story progresses she transforms into a woman who understands the darker side of life and how to survive on her own wits rather than what has been given to her. Readers see a character who converts into her true power and strength. Its stories like this that gives the reader excitement and joy out of reading. One that leaves readers anticipating the next story from this author. The story begins slowly with Promise getting ready for the day and
going about her daily activities, but it soon picks up the pace and races through to the end leaving the reader gasping for breath. It becomes easy to get soaked up into the story that nothing else matters around you.

There are some formatting issues that could help with the flow of the story such as breaking up the paragraphs and dialogue a little more. Because there is no spacing between these, it feels like one large paragraph, yet it does not take away from the quality and overall enjoyment of the story. In the beginning there are a few things that are somewhat confusing such as the usage of Class 1, Class 2 etc. Once you understand the class structure it becomes a bit easier. It is fun and interesting that the houses are broken up based on the different elements: earth, fire, air, water. There is a lot of descriptions which helps the reader develop a firm understanding of the world which Miller creates and presents to her audience.

There is a lot of buildup in the story to something bigger. It leaves the reader wanting more and anticipating the continuation of this tale. It is a story that is captivating and enthralling from beginning to end. Powerless shows strong character development, talented storytelling and is filled in enchanting images. Shelley Miller mesmerizes her audience with her words, making them hope for another novel. Powerless is definitely a wonderful addition to any fantasy lover’s bookshelf.
