Whether it’s something as minor as judging whether a person should eat one thing or another, or something major like the judgement of a criminal, judgement plays an integral role in our society, and must be examined with the lens of morality. As Thomas Aquinas once said, “Every judgement of conscience, be it right or wrong, be it about things evil in themselves or morally indifferent, is obligatory, in such wise that he who acts against his conscience always sins.”

The detail that goes into everything from the Cultural Judge York’s routine and work to the specific rituals of siring and the culture the author worked up for the Land of Butterflies makes the reader feel transported to an entirely new world, deeply immersing the reader into the narrative.

This is a novel for those who enjoy science fiction and fantasy books with a religious spin. While The rich storytelling and mythology the author implemented into the narrative was fascinating to see unfold. The examination of differences between two worlds, or two cultures, and how a belief system doesn’t have to be limited to just one world or one people if they truly believe in the message of that faith, is something truly intriguing to see play out in this book.
