Of all the literary works and genres one can imagine, few can argue that one of the best to delve deep into the human heart and emotion overall has to be poetry. Any poet or writer with a clear passion for the craft can strike the nerve of any person who has ever needed to hear someone say or write the words they never knew they spoke internally. As the great Edgar Allen Poe once said, “With me poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion.” In author Martin Wasserman’s book Thinking In Tristichs: Original Poems Inspired By Thomas Wolfe ’ s Short Stories, the author takes the great works of Thomas Wolfe and brings to them a whole new meaning.

In the book, the author takes the works of Thomas Wolfe and translates them in a whole new way. Specifically taking into account the works of Thomas Wolfe’s short stories, the author creates a series of haiku’s and senryu and transforms these works of art into a three-line poem that is known as tristichs, as denoted by the Greek poet Yannis Ritsos. The tristichs in this book speak from the heart, and bring an emotional outlook to the short stories of the great Thomas Wolfe.

This is an incredible work of art. In less than a hundred pages, the author conveys a slew of emotions as the works of Thomas Wolfe inspire truly beautiful poetry. One early poem that is a personal favorite states, “To know beauty, try knowing reality, with all its quiet mystery.” This speaks to me as a reader to how the mysteries of the Universe and things that cannot be explained right away drive us all forward and give us an appreciation for the world; a world that has yet to be fully explored.

This was a fantastic read. The book is for anyone who loves poetry, obscure poetry styles like tristichs and the works of Thomas Wolfe being translated into this type of poetry. As a fan of poetry and the way it connects to readers on an emotional level, the author did a beautiful job of conveying some truly deep and intriguing messages which speaks to the heart and mind all at once.

A book filled with breathtaking poetry that touches on the pulse of the human heart, author Martin Wasserman has created a true work of art. To see such amazing poetry based on the amazing works of Thomas Wolfe showcases the passion and impact an author’s poetry can have years after its initial publication, and artists can not only be inspired by that work but can create new work to inspire others in the future.
