Reading poetry draws the reader into the mind, heart, and soul of the poet, there is an introspective sharing of experiences and emotions. Ultimately, a connection is formed between reader and poet that can be both indelible and empathetic. In Heart’s Song: The Whispers of My Heart, Kumar J. Sadhwani’s compilation of his poetic connection is definitively formed immediately; as you read his leading poem in the book, A Battle for Life, which is a stunning poem about his facing the ultimate challenge of life, battling grave illness.

Although a tome of a book, (the book is over 700 pages) each poem is a worthy and honest expression of Sadhwani’s soul, within which he vividly builds with the soul- stirring sentiments of his life. His is a world which is stockpiled with raw emotion and depth of feeling, which he readily and unabashedly shares. You will find that you are captured by his deeply emotional stanzas, which often seem to stem from pained and conflicted places, but there are also those sparkling, precious gems that focus on more positive elements like hope such as Opening Doors. Also presented are some endearing tributes to loved ones like Happy Birthday Mama, or My Didi.

I found Heart’s Song to be an emotionally intense and thought-provoking read making me reaffirm my appreciation for my health and how I perceive my life. After all, nothing is guaranteed to us in this life and any of us could be in Mr. Sadhwani’s position, dealing with facing a dire illness. Also, what was especially touching about his poetic works was the depth of his emotions. There is an emotive tangibility in his portrayal of his passions, his love, his despondency and his bravado, which artfully brings you to a place where you have to take pause to digest the emotions.

Moreover, from a literal perspective, the book itself is not perfect, there are minor grammatical issues within the poems and formatting issues that made some of the reading slightly awkward. Nevertheless, his poems are perfect pieces of narrative in and of themselves, because they are perfect expressions of aspects of the author’s being. His words are evocative, poignant and sentimental, portraying the deeper senses of life; longing, loss, reverence for death, and reminiscences. Wholly, Heart’s Song is a work to be read not only by connoisseurs of poetry but connoisseurs of deeply emotional reads. I wish Mr. Sadhwani the best of luck with his life and health and I pray for him to never lose hope or the will to write.
