No matter what a person’s political affiliation and belief system is in the United States there is little doubt that the election of Donald Trump to the presidency has become the source of much debate and controversy over the years. Never in the history of the United States has the nation’s moral fiber and the fabric of what the country’s foundation has stood on since its inception been tested more than during his election, and with his election came many fears which have come to pass in his first year back in office.

Those fears are what drove author Dr. John Ayoola Akinyemi to write the book I Am Scared; VERY SCARED! The book is a personal essay of sorts, which depicts the author’s real-world fears and struggles in the lead-up to the 2024 Presidential Election. The book balances the rhetoric and promises that came from the Trump campaign that the author fears will destroy what made the United States the country it has been for centuries, to the promise of hope that Kamala Harris and her campaign echoed in their run and the hope that many Americans need in these most trying of times.

The author crafted a short yet poignant read. The raw and powerful emotions the author can convey throughout this series of essays felt relevant and spoke to the real-world tension and struggles that so many are having in this current political climate. The honesty with which the author wrote was heartfelt in its delivery and speaks to the worry many have come to feel for the state of the United States of America in recent years with the divisiveness and change in outlook politically speaking over the course of the last two election cycles.

What stood out in this book was the political commentary and how personal it felt. The author writes not from the perspective of a long-time political pundit, but instead from an immigrant who has become a proud U.S. citizen who sees the foundation of the country crumbling under the weight of the current leadership. The very human and emotional point of view is both unique and speaks to the heart of the average citizen, whose lives are the ones most deeply affected by the administration serving under Donald Trump. The theme of fear and the ways in which hope is interspersed within the author’s writing make the book feel both important and balanced overall, making this one political commentary non-fiction read that is too critical to overlook.
