In any relationship, there is one factor that comes into play when in lasting romances, and that factor is communication. Being on the same page – or at least having a straightforward way of understanding one another – and being able to communicate one another’s needs and desires within their relationship is a vital part of being in a healthy and worthwhile relationship.
Communication becomes the central focus of author J.T. Tierney’s Perfect Plans. The book follows Ryan Porter, a young man with a gift for data sets and various systems, but he has failed to understand how to communicate with people. Then he meets Sofie, a young woman who has the unique gift of being able to make people feel they are understood. Together, they find themselves tackling the social world of New York City as Sofie becomes Ryan’s social translator, and soon enough, they find themselves connecting in unexpected ways.
The author did an incredible job of infusing heart and humor into every fiber of this novel. The chemistry between both Ryan and Sofie is instantaneous, at least in humor, as these completely different people find themselves thrown together to tackle the job of event coordination and planning. The vastly unique background Ryan hails from and his open, honest approach to life stands in stark contrast to the professional yet hidden realities of Sofie’s own life, and yet their dynamic together as the story progresses showcases the emotions that develop between them while also giving enough time to the hilarious scenarios which come to life in each chapter; with each new event, from horror-themed conventions to accounting conferences and so much more. There was also some workplace drama and shocking revelations made from within the event coordination company they worked for regarding some other members of the staff, and this added needed drama and fuel to keep the narrative running smoothly without taking readers out of the central core of the connection between Ryan and Sofie.
For anyone who is a massive fan of romantic comedies, especially those that take on a fictional satire appeal and infuse romance and humor with ease, they will instantly fall in love with this novel. The themes the author explores, from workplace comedy to opposites attract romances and so much more, bring to mind the hilarious and at times awkward yet engaging comedies found in situational, professional-based stories, while also adding unique story development to turn this narrative into a true original. The heartfelt way the story and these characters on their journey show how there can be beauty in both chaos and order, and sometimes finding that right balance can bring about significant change and heart, made this a memorable novel that rom-com fans will be driven to time and time again.
