This book isn’t just the culmination of a three-book series; it is the culmination of a life well-lived. It may not be the kind of book that people expect, but that doesn’t negate the significance of 30 Degrees on Bypass. Dr. Yurvarti isn’t trying to pass on information as much as he is trying to shore up a legacy in this book. If you have enjoyed his past works, or think you might, this is definitely a book you want to read.
The book begins with an update on the author’s health, which, unfortunately, is not positive. He does try to put a positive spin on things, and hopefully, he’ll be around to finishing all the projects he outlines in this book. From there, Dr. Yurvati moves into reminiscing about his time in school. A theme throughout the book, but showcased in these chapters, is his incredible organizational skills that allowed him to share report cards from decades ago. Dr. Yurvati shares many pictures from throughout his life in this book to create a scrapbook that tells a story. The book goes on to talk about his time in the military, his love for his cats, his love for his wife, and his love for writing. All of these are accompanied by plenty of visuals, making this book just as visually appealing as it is to read.
This is Dr. Yurvati’s third book, so it’s clear he’s had some experience writing. Albeit short and sweet, with many pictures to accompany the words, this book still holds great value. Since it is an autobiography of sorts, the text doesn’t need to adhere to much structure other than that set forth by grammar. However, Dr. Yurvati does a wonderful job of keeping the ideas in the book linear and not jumping around too much. His time in school and the military are especially intriguing chapters in the book, but his soft spot for his many cats will likely be the chapter that wins over most readers. At under 100 pages this book is a lightning-fast read; however, the accompanying images make it just as much of a coffee table book as it is reading material.
Sadly, it sounds like there is a chance Dr. Yurvarti’s time here is coming to an end. Hopefully, that is not the case, as he mentions a couple more books he’d like to complete. His legacy will always be remembered through his writing, especially in this book, where he finds time to talk about his life away from surgery more than his life as a doctor. The best way to describe this book is sitting down with your grandpa as he digs through his old chest and tells you the stories that are attached to each trinket he finds. Dr. A. H. Yurvati brings technical expertise and philosophical reflection together, creating a narrative that both educates and inspires. This is not just a surgeon’s story—it’s a testament to the pursuit of excellence in the service of life itself.
