In any good horror story, there comes a moment when the story twists into a direction both shocking and entertaining. From protagonists who have been dead the entire story, to FBI agents hunting down killers who end up being linked to beloved family members, and so much more, horror stories have a knack of twisting the knife and keeping the heart pumping even in the most seemingly calm moments of the story. Ghost stories have this habit, as more often than not, spirits are not the aggressors of a horror story, but the warning specter of a far more human and sinister threat.
This is the driving force behind author Jeff Allen’s Shadows Down a Dark Hallway. The narrative focuses on Michael, a young man who finds his life in disarray after the sudden loss of his father. For his entire childhood, Michael had a long history of imaginary friends, but after his father’s loss, unexpected encounters with the dead leave him paralyzed as he realizes he holds a chilling gift. Yet this gift is not without its drawbacks, as some of the ghosts who visit him hold grim reminders of the past, while others show a far more sinister plot unraveling in the present day, and only Michael can help ease the spirits’ suffering and stop more from joining the dead before it is too late.
Atmospheric is the word that first comes to mind when delving into this story. Shifting between the protagonist’s past and present, as well as the history of this small Indiana town, made this book feel vibrant and alive on the page. The rich character development was a standout in this narrative, with honest depictions of grief and growth in Michael’s evolution throughout the story. Yet the haunting realities of mastering these abilities and using them mirrored the overall growth of Michael’s life and the journey many must muster up to find their passion in life. The tension and the history that the author infused into the fabric of the story stood out immediately on the pages.
Horror fans, especially those who enjoy ghost stories that add a human element to both the hero and the villain of this story and throw in bits of romance and history for good measure will thoroughly enjoy this book. The visceral imagery of the author’s writing style really captured the heart and emotion that comes with life working in the ER, and the honest reactions and depictions of Michael’s interactions with spirits will instantly connect with those who truly identify with the paranormal in life as well, and the novel overall feels like a world which readers could easily step back into time and time again, both in this novel and in any future stories waiting for the protagonist to explore. Perfect for fans of moody thrillers with a twist of the supernatural.
