This is the second book in author Geoffrey Bott’s trilogy featuring the exploits of Daniel Cross. In this one, our international hero, Cross, is up against a fearless nemesis with a dogged desire to take over powerful governments. This story brings Cross out of retirement, sending him around the world to try and stop his latest formidable opponent.

In the author’s first book Cross, a British scientist, is asked to use his scientific expertise by both British and American intelligence agencies to resolve a potential global crisis. Inthis one, Cross partners with the same agencies with the same goal in mind, building on the mutual trust he established during his first mission. But this time, Cross must match wits with someone who manipulates situations through the use of advanced technology.

I was drawn into the story immediately. The action begins with giant container ships mysteriously sinking in the middle of storms, seemingly controlled not by the ship’s captain but by an unseen master. Additionally, a ship explodes as it moves through the Panama Canal. Global shipping is under attack, but by whom? And to what end?  In steps Cross and a band of intrepid compatriots charged with finding the answer to that question. The book is filled with confusion about who and what is real and who and what is not; Cross must untangle multiple technological puzzles. Without giving away too much of the intrigue, Cross and friends are up against the latest in Artificial Intelligence technology, as well-advanced hardware and software equipment that help interfere with Cross’ attempts at uncovering what appears to be a clandestine operation, engineered by a foe from Cross’ past who wants him dead.

I love good thrillers. Now that I’ve read two of the three Cross books, I am looking forward to what comes in the third narrative. In both, the plots centered on taking over the White House. What might happen in the final story? Will evil forces succeed? Mr. Bott spins a captivating yarn and I am invested in the life and exploits of super-agent Cross. He’s well-defined, larger than life in a credible way and a sympathetic,
compassionate and courageous protagonist.

Bott also writes with a believable understanding of the intricate workings of intelligence agencies, moving operatives around the world in chess like precision. He keeps the action moving forward with writing that is direct and concise. I appreciate his crisp dialogue, well defined support characters and his understanding of global politics. As much as I appreciate an absorbing stand-alone mystery, I truly enjoy a book series.  There’s comfort in stepping into a story that I have a history with; characters become friends. And even though I know this hero is likely to solve whatever crisis is happening, based on previous successes, I still cheer him along, because that’s what friends do.

Make new friends or check in with Geoffrey Bott’s latest, The Art of Deception, the latest lively Daniel Cross thriller. Art of Deception pulls readers into a lethal maze of betrayal, hidden agendas, and dangerous truths waiting to explode.
