Life on Earth is not an easy life to live with all of the violence happening within our society. So what would happen if an alien race had a plan to be rid of the violence on Earth and have a world at peace for once? Would it be a situation where we could actually trust the alien lifeforms, or would it cause too much geopolitical strife on Earth for them to ever be fully trusted to achieve world peace? That is one of the main plot points of Tranquility Moon: Where Violence Has No Voice by author Tom Skore.

In this science fiction novel, we meet Paul Connors: an astronaut sent into space on a mission who then meets aliens while on the moon who want his help in executing a plan to end the violence on Earth. He has already been reeling from the week’s events on Earth, including a shooting at his own son’s school, and now he must grapple with this important decision to trust the aliens he has just met and potentially start a geopolitical war between Earth and the aliens who potentially want nothing but to bring peace to his planet.

A big theme throughout this tale is the contrast of the chaotic, violent nature of Earth with the harmonious peace and safety one feels while in the vastness of space. What I like most about this story is the depiction of the alien race Paul meets, and the stark contrast with what we usually associate with aliens in movies, television, and books alike. They typically want to take over our world in violent and dramatic fashion but in this version, when we first meet them, we get a much more optimistic side to the aliens who give us a warm, welcoming embrace with a vision of peace for all of humanity. It’s a truly beautiful take on the classic alien phenomenon while still leaving their true intent ambiguous enough that you will continue to keep on guessing all throughout.

This character-driven story will please sci-fi fans alike, particularly those who enjoyed other fantastic sci-fi tales like “Arrival” or “Contact.” Skore is a master at seamlessly interweaving social commentary with science fiction themes and touching on serious subject matter such as the violence we experience here on Earth and how humanity as a whole has become increasingly used to it instead of making peaceful change happen.
