Far-fetched and a little absurd, author Lane Sturkie tickles intrigue in The Encounter, where a group of Pentecostal missionaries find themselves warring for souls in Nigeria against outer-space aliens. While an unlikely plotline for a work of fiction surrounding the adventures of Christian missionaries, The Encounter unfolds as if it could happen to anyone, making it all the more enticing.

Thrill, tension, and action turn pages as Sturkie’s cast of characters work not only in the Nigerian mission field, but also against cosmic forces of evil in the world. Extremely well-written and peppered with relevant NIV Bible verses, Sturkie’s storytelling and commitment to faith command the work without sacrificing readability or entertainment.

While Sturkie combines fast pacing with a bulletproof plot to create a true page-turner, the author’s dedication to realism creates a satisfying contrast given the sci-fi elements. Meticulously planned, every detail of the story belongs and progresses the characters further on their mission. Evidence of the author’s dedication to reality is clear from the very first page of the novel, as while reading I could picture the scene exactly. While no easy feat, Sturkie’s ability to juxtapose real world terrors alongside demonic monsters makes The Encounter not only enjoyable but inspiring. The story even includes heavenly elements and influences; I found these descriptions of angels interceding for the characters charming and heartwarming.

The author’s biblical understanding, as well as descriptions of church functions, missionary endeavors, and the way of life of a Christian clearly demonstrates a lifelong commitment to faith. The verses included throughout the book fit well within the plot of the story, offering an opportunity to consider well-known verses in everyday situations. While the characters belong to the Pentecostal church, many Christians may find the story relatable. The missionary field is a journey of challenges for many Christians who decide to dedicate their life to growing Christianity. While as ridiculous as a gory horror movie, The Encounter remains tastefully entertaining until the end.

I would recommend this novel alongside Bible studies for adults, the book surrounds a widespread problem causing destruction across today’s society. Sturkie truly flourishes in using her talents to demonstrate her faith.
