In the world of fiction, one of the oldest themes explored is the battle of good versus
evil. The rise of heroes as they face off against the villains looking to destroy the world
or just be rid of the hero themselves has become a powerful theme which has many
nuances that go along with it. Chiefly among them is the question of what makes
someone or something good or evil, and the many shades of gray that exist.

This question comes to the forefront in author Andrew Whyte’s A God’s Game:
Tiebreaker Part 2. The novel brings about the exciting conclusion of a deadly game
being played by three gods – with humanity caught in the middle. As a reluctant hero
emerges after all the chaos and pain he has endured, the news that the gods are ready
to wrap up their games while the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. This leads him
to challenge the most condescending of the gods, and fight with everything he has
learned to take down the world of Warterria once and for all.

The author does an incredible job of world building in this novel. The way in which each
faction of fighters and survivors is carefully constructed, and the bonds that bring some
together while others are forced into battle make this story shine on each page. The
complex history of protagonist Rift and those who work with him, as well as the
evolution of his character as he faces these overwhelming odds and powerful deities,
not only kept the fantasy elements alive, but shows the overall theme of adaptation and
survival as a precursor for humanity. These elements make this a beautiful story to get
lost in.

The accessibility of the novel’s story does stand out. While many readers will benefit
from reading the other books in this series, the way the author builds up the world
around this narrative and even includes pages dedicated to previous events and
characters in the world’s events made this a great entry in the series. The overall theme
of the nature of good and evil, and the many shades of gray that exist, was powerfully
written into this story. The heart and the passion for this theme was felt in how these
survivors face so many hardships, made difficult and sometimes even wrong choices,
and yet in the face of overwhelming odds found a way to define themselves once and
for all, one way or the other, making the story such that readers won’t be able to put it
down.
