Prolific musician and poet Travis Sharp has released over 15 music albums in
collaboration with other artists, as well as four collections of poetry. Now in this fifth
volume, Fabric of Light, he takes on a rhythmic dreamlike approach to reveal patterns of
verse that tap into feelings, memory, the past, life’s happenings, personal growth and
reflection. In this eclectic compilation of fifty-three songs and poems Sharp explores
human experience, emotions, and various cosmic connections.
Consider “Angles You Taught” where Sharp writes about the loss of a friend. He speaks
of life’s unexpected changes with a simple declaration of “life, to dirt”. He then explores
learning to play billiards but likens it to life’s game. The poem “Archeologist” reflects
unlocking the mysteries of the past. Fragile relics and artifacts displayed in a museum
contain answers to questions and help us learn.
Poems like “Dream While Awake” and “Into The Unknown” that include both chorus and
verse suggest song material. Here thoughts are ignited to live your life and find out
where you belong. The emphasis is on life being a journey, and not a destination.
Consider it a road trip with all its twists and turns.
There is a rhythmic beat to most of Sharp’s work, clearly a reflection of his musical
background. Most are segmented into four-line or two-line rhymes. “To Another Level” is
a lengthy composition divided into three verses, and reminiscent of a rap song with a
staccato beat. The highlights of rising stardom are detailed as “lyrical explorations, vocal
animations; Finding levitations, overflow obligations, rehearsing simulations.”
While Sharp’s artful, poetic lyrics are undoubtedly thought-provoking, the abstract
nature of much of his work might make his collection less accessible to a general
audience. While such poems may not appeal to those who prefer a more direct, linear
route with their reading, for those drawn to a more varied cosmic and surreal journey of
thought and emotion, Sharp takes his fellow travelers along for an interesting poetic
ride. With a voice both intimate and universal, Sharp offers readers a meditation on
resilience and the quiet brilliance that defines the human journey.
