While the age of technology has been a glorious thing for so many aspects of our lives, whether it’s increased connectivity via social media or advancements in medical care and job opportunities, technology does come with its drawbacks as well. Jobs that have become a cornerstone of a community for decades or sometimes even centuries will suddenly find their jobs obsolete, and their family’s wellbeing and security at risk, all because technology has rendered these jobs no longer essential to the development of the community. Finding a way to balance these struggles economically and socially amongst those living off of the advancements of technology and those finding their lives uprooted because of technology is one of the issues facing our growing world now.

In author Dolores Moses’s Family Matters, the author explores the concept of this divide through an exploration of several characters. Whether it is the savvy-computer expert Barry being forced into an early retirement, or Jamie and Paul, union leaders who are forced to fight for the survival of an industry which has survived for over a century in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay surroundings, the book explores several different characters, all coming from different situations and backstories, and explores how the growing economic and technological issues facing our world have impacted them, and the divide which continues to grow as a result.

The thoroughness and intellectual way the author approaches this topic is so expertly woven into the narrative. Clashes between the different classes and families creates the subtle tension that fills the conversations and actions of these characters, and the variety of characters and their reactions to this very personal and impactful subject help highlight the divides and need for bridging the gap between our social and economics circles as a whole.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy fictional tales of drama – both familiar and work-inspired drama to be more specific. What felt so impactful and engaging about this narrative all throughout the book was the way the story felt naturally inspired by the current struggles of our world today, and so meticulously examined the pros-and-cons of technology in our own world and its impact on everyone, not just the younger generations or the wealthy. Personally, as someone who has seen both the positive and negative effects of this technology age, finding a means of training and securing jobs for those whose jobs are being affected by growing technology should be a top priority, not just letting them go from the jobs that have kept their families stable for so long. Especially when other factors like our world’s climate and the impact certain industries are having on the world as a whole.

A memorable, intricately detailed, and entertaining yet profound read, author Delores Moses’s Family Matters is a must-read book. The gripping way the author weaves these personal stories and their various character developments into the narrative makes this novel shine brightly, and kept me, as a reader, invested throughout its entirely. A story of realism, social standings, and the impact of technological advances and companies on other industries made this a brilliant book to dive into, and if you haven’t yet, you should grab your copy today and see for yourselves.
