There is nothing more refreshing than reading a book you can quite literally say you have never read anything like it before. That was one of my first thoughts when I began reading Flying To Breakfast: A New World On The Horizon by Dori Seider, Ph.D. Years ago, back in the 1980s, the author of this novel decided to take a flight class and wrote a very detailed diary during the time she took this class with her instructor, Diane. Fast forward to 2020, when she was in lockdown because of the Coronavirus, and she found this diary amongst memories from her past.

Upon reading it, she found how lessons from her flight class could also be applied to relevant topics of today. How it could inspire and help us to let go of things that cause us to fear the unknown and in turn, help us trust again. These are incredibly wonderful aspirations anyone could benefit from, in my humble opinion. So, we find ourselves on a journey in the past with Diane and Dori during their flight class, learning lessons laced with metaphors which relevantly help us with topics of today – such as rebuilding a world full of “equality, justice, democracy and basic human rights.”

These topics have always mattered but are relevant even more so in today’s divided and heated political climate. As we go along this flight with these two inspirational women, through the eyes of Dori and her diary, we can see how all of the important subject matter comes together to give us hope and inspire us to be resilient and determined – no matter what comes our way in life. It is a very empowering read for people of all walks of life, but particularly for women with strong values who want to further their lives while also helping the world become a better place as a whole.

Dr. Seider has been involved for years in many incredible causes including antiwar efforts and teach-ins about systemic racism. All of this shows that she practices what she preaches, so to speak, and truly believes these causes are worthy of the efforts others can put in to make our country and the world a better, happier place to live in, for all. I cannot say enough about how important and amazing this book is, and it would be wonderful if book clubs everywhere added this into their rotation. It even helps that there are book questions at the ready to help the conversation get started about these topics
