Baptist deacon and retired banker Aaron Parry addresses two groups of people in his plea Get of the Darkness, however this informational book can bring understanding and wisdom to nearly any Christian, as well as work in the heart of an unbeliever.
Parry’s illustrations show Christians and non-believers what it means to be a Christian and to live by the spirit. Many people go through life carrying the same values they learned in childhood – if Johnny hits you – hit him back. Christians learn is not the Christlike response, instead Jesus calls us to turn the other cheek. Parry continues to demonstrate how our faith is part of our body, however not located solely in the mind (our thoughts) or flesh (our actions) but within our spirit. Many Christians hear that Bible reading is the most important way to gain the wisdom of God’s Word, Parry insists readers also meditate on the Word so that it may fulfill the spirit.
Once Parry describes the darkness in which many Christians and nonbelievers live in, he shows readers the way towards the light. He teaches Jesus is the light of the world. In the daytime we need the sun to see, Parry shows us we need the Son of God to live a life out of the darkness. Parry talks about the amazing grace of Jesus Christ and what he did to give believers everlasting life beside the Father in Heaven. Parry presents the gospel in a simple way, making it easy for readers to share with others. While Jesus calls all Christians to spread the Truth and win lost souls unto him, many find themselves lost for words when an opportunity arises to give the Gospel to an unbeliever. Parry’s interpretation of the Gospel gives the readers’ spirit inspiration in teaching others about what Jesus did for them and the eternal gift of Salvation.
Parry employs clear writing and a gentle tone to reach his audience; his book is slight and easy to read in a short amount of time. He says only what is necessary and explains his thoughts and ideas clearly. When referencing scripture, he cites a variety of translations including the King James Version of the Bible as well as the New International Version, and others. Many preachers often stick to one version vehemently, however Parry’s discernment among versions shows not only his vast understanding and knowledge of the Word of God but also his ability to choose which translation speaks best to the reader. It is clear that Parry’s heart lies with his readers and that he cares about their spiritual well-being. Get Out of the Darkness serves not as a theatre for Parry’s knowledge and experience in the church, but as an outstretched hand to the people living with the heaviness of darkness in their spirit.
I recommend this book to all Christians, especially in the social climate of 2026 – a time of great darkness and division. Reading Get Out of the Darkness not only ignites the spirit, it leaves your body and mind hungry for more. Parry’s book is a must read, and definitely a must to share with anyone you know.
