While childhood is considered one of the most formative periods of time in a person’s life, there is another period which comes to mind as to great change and forming who a person will become as an adult, and that is college. Those who are fortunate enough to get the college experience not only gain a prominent education in the field of their choice, but they are able to learn what it is like to live on their own for the first time and get a sense of what life as an adult will truly be like.
In author and Dr. Chris Apoder O’Riordan-Adjah MS PE Getting the Most Out Of Your College Experience: A User-Friendly Guide, the author explores college in extreme detail. The guide works to provide information about both the academic life in college, and the resources students should be able to access while there, as well as suggestions the author must tackle the obstacles which may arise while in college. The book also hones in on everything from selecting colleges to preparing for life after college and so much more.
The author’s unique relatability and conversational tone in his writing style really was the first thing which stood out to me. The author writes with both authority and honesty, speaking not only to his own experiences in college but the things he did not get to experience and later learned from as a result. The chapters of this guide are very detailed, dealing with everything from the expected topics of choosing colleges and classes, to more in-depth topics such as the caffeine content in popular drinks college students consume, and the annual salaries students can earn from either trade school jobs or public safety work. The author’s ability to connect with readers and explore each topic in depth while relating to his own perspective allowed the college experience to really come to life on the pages of this book.
For those who enjoy nonfiction books, especially books on education and higher education topics and guides on college, this is the best book to have on their bookshelf. The readability of the book is what really stands out, as it not only brings that heart-to-heart feeling when the author connects with the reader, but the guide itself is so in-depth and captivating readers are able to put it down and return to it time again whenever a question or concern arises for college life. The book speaks both to college students preparing to enter college life and those who are in the throes of it already, as well as parents who want a better understanding of what their children are experiencing in the modern college world.
