One of life’s hardest lessons to learn is how to process and deal with grief. Unlike many other lessons around the world, there is no one definitive and “right” way to do this, and everyone must experience and deal with loss in their own way. Yet there are techniques and practices which can help people go through this process, and grief can also have a different impact on you depending on the age in which you experience it. For while the pain of that grief will always be there, our understanding and capability of handling grief plays into the age in which we first come across this emotional experience.

In author Cindy Moynes’s Helping You Through Your Loss: Explaining, Understanding, and Sharing Your Feelings, the author explores how to educate both parents and children alike on how to help children process grief. Using a coloring book method of approach, the author hopes to not only bring children into the conversation around loss and death to help them cope with the grieving process, but allow parents to learn how to give their children space and time to go through this process themselves, and also keep their treasured memories of their lost loved ones intact.

The author does a wonderful job of crafting an interactive and sensitive approach to the tough subject matter at hand. The innocence that many parents fear their child will lose when confronting loss is understandable, and yet the author expertly shares techniques and interactive experiences for children to partake in ways which will help them process the loss they are experiencing. The way the author is able to not only teach and educate children through this process, but recognize the pain and loss the parents are also enduring, and take that into account when touching upon this much-needed conversation surrounding death itself was remarkable to read about.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy children’s books, especially those which are non-fiction and deal with concepts of death, loss, and the grieving process as a whole, as well as coloring books and interactive children’s books. The balance the author finds between the interactive exercises that encourage children to participate and the lessons being taught to parents as they try to educate their children in the best way possible was great to see come to life, as it speaks to the author’s own experiences with loss and the need to confront it in a meaningful way.

Engaging, heartfelt, and thoughtful, author Cindy Moynes’s Helping You Through Your Loss: Explaining, Understanding, and Sharing Your Feelings is a must-read children’s book and coloring book which emphasizes the impact and emotion of loss and grief. The experience of loss is not one that anyone wants to go through, but in the blinding light of loss often comes a forgetfulness surrounding children and how they come to understand loss. The helpful lessons and engaging content for children will allow readers a true path that will bring children more into the discussion surrounding death and loss.
