Make a Way for Your Rescue and Believe for a New Beginning is a Bible-based guide to living. The author, David Piper weaves together lessons from the Bible and examples from his own life to help guide readers’ journey towards faith and living one’s best life. The author is a masterful storyteller and helps readers relate to Bible passages and stories by making them more relatable to modern day struggles. The book can be read in its entirety or the reader could also focus on the chapters related to their current struggles to gain clarity and benefit from the author’s wisdom. David Piper is successful in accomplishing the goal of writing the book. Ultimately to help others avoid life’s common mistakes and pitfalls, while recommending they stay strong in their beliefs and prioritize fulfilling their promises and holding themselves accountable.

The book is accessible and relatable to a wider range of readers because of the high quality of the author’s writing and the stories and examples included in each chapter to help with the reader’s struggles and focus on their success in overcoming their current challenges in life. Working through the book’s chapters would be helpful for readers from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. “Make a Way for Your Rescue” caters to those who already have an understanding of the stories in the Bible through growing up in the church, but also people who are searching for greater meaning in their lives, struggling with the large and small barriers to living life to the fullest. Overall, the author’s conservative values and viewpoints are apparent in terms of his church’s beliefs about divorce, marriage, abortion, and other divisive themes. However, the majority of the Bible references and passages and stories are themes that are universal for all humans who have and/or are exploring a relationship with God.

For those who look forward going to church and were raised with the universal values Mr. Piper encourages, his readers will have no hesitation to put in their faith and follow this advice. I found the chapters concerning marriage, even when there is abuse or unfaithfulness, to be interesting. Although I may not agree with the author’s conclusions about preserving a marriage at all costs, I learned a lot from reading the chapters and hearing the justifications. I enjoyed the candid passages from the author’s life when he regrets past mistakes and his relationship and forgiveness of his abusive brother. I agree reconciliation is a healing process.

The book is very well-written and error free. I appreciate the high quality of writing and the knowledge and skill necessary for combining verses and stories from the Bible and making them relatable with a modern feel to help people today with their struggles and questions. I can imagine this book being read and discussed as a family with teenaged children. It’s also a great companion for a confirmation class as well as providing support and encouragement for recovering alcoholics and anyone looking for a new direction and strength in difficult times.
