One of the many good things about this book is that is filled with accounts of the author’s personal experiences of synchronicity and ‘flow.’ Too many accounts of the spiritual path are abstract and laden with generalities. Messages: Flowing with Synchronicity generously brings to life true accounts of moments that resonated with meaning and connection for the author. These moments, captured in winning prose and smooth narrative, will ring true for the reader as well.
Author Denny Daikeler, who is an interior decorator (and a mom, and a workshop leader, and a writer), lives in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Her blessings include her rapport with the flora and fauna that surround her. In one memorable anecdote, she recounts the wished-for appearance of a hoot owl in her backyard. (One of the take home lessons of this handy spiritual memoir is that the properly attuned person often gets what he or she asks for.) The owl, and later a snake, appear at precise moments in her life when they need to; this establishes a community of awareness and belonging for the author, and goes a long way toward convincing the reader that faith and hope and love are their own abundant reward.
Denny Daikeler taps into a rich source of legend, mythology, and belief in these tales. Totemic animals, nature experiences, synchronicity (the unexplained co-occurrence of meaningful events), and ‘flow’ (being in the moment, of the moment, and for the moment) are all part of the luscious tapestry woven in this memoir. To her credit, Denny Daikeler addresses questions that may arise for the doubtful reader: Are these messages real? What do they mean? Why are they here? The author’s convictions are tested by her own passages through illness and with the loss of significant others, but her resilience and appreciation of the banquet of life is never really shaken. The writing is fluent and generous and is served up in a series of very palatable anecdotes that can be enjoyed all at once, or one at a time.
Denny Daikeler supplements each section with do-it-yourself exercises intended to sharpen awareness and to bring the ‘great outdoors’ of nature and the Universe into resonance with each reader’s world. The overall feeling of the book – that of a great adventure, or many adventures shared – is achieved and we as readers are grateful for the ride.
