Poetry can be divided into two groups; the beat poet offering views and emotions as they flow from his mind to his pen, and classical poets conforming to the various rigid rules of foot, alliteration, meter and rhyme. Author and poet Robert Lewis Dey polishes his words into the latter of the various styles in his collection titled, Quest: Seeking Promise in the Here and After.

Displaying a deep love of Christ while embarking on his strength of faith, Dey seeks out the mysteries of life while adorning a sensitive appreciation for all of the wonders of the world in which we live in. Clearly endless hours of wordsmithing have gone into the polishing of his collection of poems. His poetry deals with the tangents of the mystery of faith, life, love and self-awareness. A guide, perhaps, for those seeking meaning in their lives or a celebration to others with a heightened faith; Quest is filled with highly groomed grammatical structure embellishing the love he shows for God as well as to those who touch his life. Much, if not all of this original collection is so well done that a silent “wow” came to my thoughts often, making me pause with humility of the readings. Beautifully done with the intricacies of weaving a tapestry of words into the presentation of his unabashed feelings, a joy-filled collection on the meanings of so many feelings obvious to all yet so hard to express; Dey writes in such a way he makes it seem easy.

I particularly liked his description of Christmas, bringing to mind the magic of the season and his other poems revealing his thoughts on the eternity of the hereafter. His analogy of life being like a candle; shedding light until the last flicker, whether in a cave or a castle the light is the same. That poem was beautifully written. The amount of work put into his poems shows readers just how important faith and love are for self-actualization of a full existence.

Quest is a must for contemporary poetry fans. It is a book which gets even better with re- reading and taking time to immerse one’s self into the patterns of praise he brings to the Lord. A fine addition to faith based libraries; Quest can certainly be used to spark creativity in others in discussion and group readings. This book is certain to transcend the mass of books emerging in the genre of poetry, destined to make Robert Lewis Dey a poet, whose work will live on long into the future, thus becoming a person who had defined his thoughts with style, grace and love to many others fortunate enough to read this collection.
