Whether you are a religious person or not, we all tend to look for miracles during times of great stress or worry. Miracles, or the hope of a miracle, give many people the power to go on with their life and work towards a better tomorrow. As author Samuel Smiles once said, “Hope… is the companion of power, and the mother of success; for who so hopes has within him the gift of miracles.”

In author J.W. Delorie’s The Book of Caleb: Thorns of Passion, the author brings to life a journey towards miracles and a story of hope and faith. In this fictional tale, the story focuses on Caleb, a teenager who lost his father in a fishing accident on the Sea of Galilee. A year later, Caleb has become responsible for taking care of his mother and younger brother, but continuous visions and dreams of God lead him to a discovery. He goes on a perilous journey to find the Crown of Thorns, but despite his brother’s desire to join him on the journey and his mother’s worry, his faith drives him to accept this calling from God.

This is a unique and creative read. The author begins the protagonist’s journey early on in the novel, throwing the reader right into the journey immediately and focusing on the hurdles Caleb must overcome to find the Crown of Thorns, as well as the faith that drives him ever onward. The interesting thing for non-religious leaders that will stand out is the use of history in this read as well, as the author includes the fact that Romans patrolled the streets of this area during this time and made life for the citizens there difficult. The clash of cultures showcased here is unique to this story, as it accurately highlights the history of this era while also showcasing the faith-based storyline and what life was like for many after the passing of Jesus Christ.

The novel is perfect for readers who enjoy faith or religious-based reads, in particular stories that involve Jesus Christ or those who follow his teachings. I was drawn towards the more historical nature of this story, highlighting the influence Christianity had on people in this era while living under the rule of the Roman Empire. This gave the story moments that felt more in line with the historical fiction genre, in addition to the established Christian Fiction genre.

Well-written, miracle-driven and evenly paced, author J.W. Delorie’s The Book of Caleb: Thorns of Passion is a must-read for any religious-based reader or those who enjoy faith-driven narratives that include some historical references or historical fiction themes. The author leaves readers on the edge of their seat, wanting more as the story ends on a tease or cliff-hanger of sorts, giving readers hope that there is more to Calebs story waiting to be revealed.
