The Promised Child: David is The Name is a raw and candid biography by Rick Hutchins. Born into a large family, D.L Israel grew up with an absentee father and a single mother on welfare. He took up odd jobs throughout high school to relieve his family’s economic challenges. Israel gradually realized that it would be hard for him to break through the glass ceiling as a person of color, despite his great business acumen and after working in the corporate world for some time.

D.L always longed to be his boss and put his untapped entrepreneur skills to work, and by the age of 21, Israel had saved $10,000, purchased a home, and opened a retirement fund. Gradually, he learned that God had better plans for him and chose to constantly seek His guidance and not lean on his understanding.

Rick Hutchins is a deft narrator. His writing is unflinchingly honest and approachable. The text mentions Biblical patriarchs who were in similar situations as him and the lessons he draws from their stories. With sound advice and inspirational anecdotes, the book asserts that life is how one chooses it. Some choices lead to destruction and others bear good fruit. He emphasizes the need to constantly seek the truth from the Word of God. Further, God’s way is righteousness and His promises in our lives remain constant.

D.L encourages his readers to accept life as it is and draw lessons from the difficult situations one may face. He emphasizes the need to have values such as humility, love, hope, goodness, and wisdom rather than unvirtuous qualities such as discouragement and envy. The book’s title and cover are simulating and match the tone of the book as well as serve as a hint to what is covered in the text.

The Promised Child: David is The Name is sure to garner a wide audience on account of its simplicity in language which is accessible and the beautiful lessons readers will inescapably draw from it.
