Ruth is a young woman embarking on a journey of self-discovery as she starts a career as a counselor, where she helps those in a retirement center. This gives her a unique experience as she works alongside two charming men, Evan and Peter, who open her eyes to the exploration of good and evil. As she’s drawn to both men, she’s able to look within herself at her spiritual beliefs and what is guiding her forward. The story comes from the personal experience of author Fauneil Fremont, whose time working at various Protestant churches has shaped her perspectives. This included time in a Bible study and a background as a teacher, elements in her life which helped to craft the qualities of Ruth.

The story is told from Ruth’s perspective as her journey to find herself is rooted in her spiritual discovery and growth. This is done through Ruth’s relationship with Evan and Peter, who inspire her to think deeper and become more involved, such as in a Biblical study. These are moments where you can feel Fremont sharing more of herself and incorporating glimpses of her real experiences. The beginning introduces Ruth as an ordinary girl on her way to reconnect with an old friend, which sets up the world as the everyday world you know. The tone has an idyllic tint, with the joyfulness between the characters and Ruth complementing her friend’s happiness. This creates an interesting lead-in to the various themes as she’s introduced to the struggles within society. The story includes some conversational elements with historical references and open discussions regarding important topics, such as homelessness.

The relationships she has with Peter and Evan create a love triangle, which is woven into Ruth’s spiritual discovery. Her dynamics with them allow her to see what she wants in life and how each deepens her relationship with God. The connections she has with others are an important part of the story and are explored through different scenes where the characters have in-depth discussions. This makes the story a thought-provoking read perfect for Bible studies, Sunday school, and personal reflection, thanks to the various themes at the core of their conversations. These themes include the Spirit of God, the book of Genesis, the existence of angels, the devil, and seeking God. These topics are broken down between characters, making them easy to understand and transitioning into further real-life discussions. The way the characters talk about faith makes it clear that the conversations feature deep insight from Fremont and various characters’ perspectives.

Using the religious elements, Fremont explores the lives of the different characters, particularly focusing on Ruth and the two men in her life. Evan is the first one to guide her in the direction of being a counselor and catalyzes the story to put her on the right path. Meanwhile, Peter draws her into the program, which connects her deeper to scripture and prayer. The story makes a lot of comparison between the two characters and how each impacts Ruth’s life. However, there is a deeper comparison happening between society and scripture, with the struggles she witnesses versus the beauty of what she’s learning spiritually. Ultimately, the characters represent how to connect through faith and how the best way to overcome loneliness is to reach out to others.

A fictional analysis of good and evil, The Story of Peter, Ruth, and Evan Knowing Good and Evil, explores real topics through discussions that tackle scripture, struggles, spirituality, and humanity.
