Alfred faces a very big challenge when Denis, a viscount from a neighboring kingdom, seeks protection from those wishing him harm. Alfred is in a precarious position, because by granting Denis sanctuary, he risks arousing the ire of Charles, The Duke of Lamoreaux. The very act could provoke a war. Alfred acts quickly, shunting Denis off to a monastery under the cover of darkness. The loyalty of those in Alfred’s inner circle guarantees the efficiency of the ruse as Alfred claims no knowledge of Denis’ whereabouts.

Alfred runs his kingdom with a steady hand, his wisdom unparalleled. He oversees the dispensation of justice when punishment needs to be meted out, he counsels his Daughter Juliana in not hastily running into a romantic relationship. Charles, the Duke of Lamoreaux, is currently facing instability in and out of his realm. He has been fighting the Teutons for land, while holding off rebels looking to dethrone him. The Viscount is viewed as a threat to Charles’ reign, whether real or imagined. He doesn’t completely trust Alfred, but might just reach out to him in a time of need. Charles seeks an alliance to defeat the Teutons, and hopes to convince Alfred that it is in their mutual interest. Alfred’s intelligence network has kept him abreast of the developments involving the troubled Duke, so Alfred has Charles right where he wants him. Alfred will aid Charles, but only to a certain extent. However, nothing is for certain in a world where double crosses are common and power corrupts.
