Across the world, the advancement of the rock and roll scene has been both exciting yet tumultuous. The thrill of new music, attractive performers, and a sense of rebellious freedom has been the allure and drive for many musicians and fans alike to get lost in the world of what is typically referred to as “sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.” Yet for some the glitz and glamor of the rock world can become something more, and they can easily lose themselves in that lifestyle, or for some, lose themselves in the individuals which represent that life.

Mixing that life with the passion and heat of a sudden romance can be both exhilarating and dangerous. In author Kaz Piper’s Those Little White Lines, the author explores this world unabashedly through a semi-fictional, non-fiction book. The story changes the names of most of the main players, but the experiences that lay within are true and occurred in the ‘80s. A young Australian blonde woman named Bridget meets the bad boy guitarist Jose from the United States, and soon their love affair becomes urgent and primal, driving her across the world and into a fiery relationship full of highs and lows. Yet the partying and romance begins to peel away, and soon Bridget is left to wonder if she deserves something better.

The author did such a phenomenal job of crafting a book that read like a fiction and yet was presented with such honesty and depth it felt like a conversation the author was having with the reader. The build-up of heated atmosphere early on in the book was a great juxtaposition to the tension that mounted as the story of Bridget careened into a spiral of the rock and roll lifestyle, and her relationship became about something more. The dangers and struggles were visceral, and the emotional depth of her story will not only resonate with many readers, but will speak to the sense of self-discovery that was prevalent throughout the author’s book.

This is the perfect book for those who enjoy a mixture of fictional writing styles and non-fiction experiences, especially those with an appreciation for ‘80s culture and rock and roll lifestyle which was highly engaging during that era. The distinct details of this time period and the shocking realities of those engulfed in that life balance out the more intimate and heartfelt details of the relationship between Jose and Bridget, especially when she begins bonding with other members of his family as well, becoming engrossed in his life more than she could have ever realized. A heartfelt non-fiction book which will keep readers both entertained and emotionally invested, this is one book that readers will return to time and time again.
