With his book of poetry, Uncollected: Poems of Love and Madness, poet Michael Adelman has crafted a unique and relatable collection of poems that will connect with readers from all walks of life.

Written over the course of ten years, Adelman’s poems are snapshots of the writer’s every day life and experiences. Thematically, the poems are wrought with emotion and deal with topics ranging from mental illness to death. Because the writing is coming from such an emotionally honest place, they give the reader the chance to connect to their own life circumstances and reflect on their experience. Many can relate to a poem like “I Would Apologize.” The poem’s honesty about wanting to go back in time and right a wrong, feels specific to Adelman. But that specificity is what allows it to be universal as well.

Adelman’s writing is clear and to the point, which shows how beautiful the English language can be even at it’s simplest. It’s also effective at illustrating the range of emotions the author writes about from being in love and missing that person once the relationship is over like in “Taken” to sense memories in poems like “My Grandfather’s Store.”

Uncollected: Poems of Love and Madness is a great collection of poetry for those looking to feel and think about life more introspectively. Beautiful, haunting, ‘Repose’ pulls the emotion right out of the reader, as do many others. Overall, Uncollected by Michael Adelman is a well-written, deep, eclectic collection of insightful and thought-provoking poetry…a must read for poetry lovers, and even for all other readers, as the topics and thoughts shared are very relatable to all.
