Counting from one to ten seems so natural, many of us can do it in multiple languages – even backwards. But there was a day in each of our lives, way back and likely too long ago to remember, that we needed to learn how to do it, What Happens to Numbers 1 to 10? by author Agnola Charles-Snowball is a clever and enjoyable way to imprint this knowledge into the growing minds of youngsters.

Paged with clear and bold illustrations and written with a cute galley text of rhymes, each of the numbers are paired together and brought into a bit of a poem about a trip to the zoo. What was most impressive were the quizzes at the end of the book. Asking the children to repeat the characters and theme of the poems used, along with the corresponding numbers, makes for two things to happen: First they are drilled into the knowledge base of the book; and secondly they are introduced to some forms of testing which will become a significant part of their years of schooling ahead. Introducing children into the “how to answer” quiz questions and acquainting them to the common methodology of the educational feedback of a test is actually a very big benefit within this book. Surely “A B C’s” will be taught from many books, as will numbers which will all come together in many ways for children; but the “do’s and don’ts” of answering quiz questions is something parents will have to show their children how to do, and this is the first book many kids will have to learn this very important lesson from.

Having the repetition of the presentation of the numbers along with the re-capping of the lessons in the quizzes at the end will surely bring the skill of counting from one to ten up-to-speed with children very quickly. Plus, having the adventure of a trip to the zoo is also very enjoyable!

All-in-all, What Happens to Numbers 1 to 10? Let’s Have Fun Counting Numbers makes for a wonderful children’s book which will surely deserve its place among the many of the early books for kids and a well-deserved place in family libraries. It makes for a great birthday gift for toddlers, or even as a baby shower present, as this book is good for all children, boys and girls alike.
