Finding a means of teaching future generations of children is something every parent worries about, especially those parents who have toddlers and young children who are beginning to show interest in education and the world around them. One of the most tried and true ways of doing this tends to be through books, and in particular children’s books that allow parents to read to their children. These books tend to impart important lessons or show children the path they are supposed to follow in life, all while entertaining through a mixture of fun characters and eye-catching imagery.

In author Carrolyn Foster’s Easy 8: The Big Event, the author takes young readers through the journey of a bull competition. Taking the perspective of the bulls, the story first showcases the Native American bulls and their heritage, with a presentation of Mother Earth and their history through a performance dance. They then follow this up with a competition, taking turns trying to throw cowboys off their backs in an effort to prove themselves the best of the bulls.

A hearty mixture of humor, action, and life lessons, this children’s book was a quick yet powerful read. The author did a great job of giving the bulls in this story heart and gravitas, each of their personalities shining through to highlight their own unique perspectives and views of the competition. The way the author was able to highlight the Native American culture and background into the bulls’ story and showcase the importance of a person’s heritage and culture as a whole was great to see as a lesson for children to learn. The dynamic shift into the competition aspect of the narrative and the look into what truly makes someone a winner was equally important to read, and the warm artwork was incredible to see.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy children’s books, in particular children’s books that utilize both narrative and artwork to impart an important lesson, and books that highlight Native American Culture and bull competitions as a whole. The concept and execution of this narrative was precise and well done, and the author did an amazing job of creating a narrative that children and parents alike will be able to relate to.

Heartfelt, fun, and entertaining as a whole, author Carrolyn Foster’s Easy 8: The Big Event is a must-read children’s book. The inviting and genuinely delightful artwork when paired with the memorable narrative and engaging cast of characters made such a fantastic and heartwarming book that parents will absolutely love to sit down with their children and read from.
