The concept of love and what it means or represents is a topic of constant debate. The classic meaning of love is usually viewed through a romantic lens, the bond and spark that fuels a relationship between two people. Yet the emotional undertone of love can encompass so much more, from the love of a mother for her children – to the love a friend has for someone they knew in childhood – or even the love a religious teacher or leader has for their flock.

In author R.I. Willroth’s God is Love: Not the God You Are Imagining, the author explores love through a biblical lens. The universal idea of love is put to the test as the author explores it through Christianity and faith, even going so far as to identify it as a manifestation, rather than an emotion or action. A universal concept that applies to Christianity as well as many other faiths around the world, connecting love to the creator or universal being of a particular faith is discussed as it evolves into what is known as Absolute Love.

Offering a unique blend of faith and emotion, the author does a great job of utilizing biblical references and passages to help underscore and evaluate the idea that God is Love and vice versa. The author opens each chapter with a series of quotes from biblical verses that exude a particular sentiment or trait found in love, and moves on to provide a blend of personal experience and faith-driven educational insight to explore the concept of love, from the idea of Absolutes and its connection to God and Love, to the idea that people naturally seek rest and a break from the hardships life has to offer.

Readers who are naturally drawn to nonfiction, especially those that are faith- and religion-based and draw on specific Christian texts and ideas to emphasize the role faith plays in a subject, will be enthralled by the author’s messaging in this book. The theme of love is very prominent and explored with care and relatability in this book. The author delivers powerful passages underscored by personal memories lived through to emphasize each chapter’s unique perspective, and the emotional tone the book’s messaging implies is driven by a universal concept which no matter what a person’s belief system is, will drive them to want to understand and experience more from the author’s work.  This compelling book invites believers and seekers alike to discover a God whose essence is rooted not in fear, but in unconditional love.
