Author Angelina Charles has created an inspiring illustrated children’s book, I Was Born to Run.  In this story, readers are introduced to and follow James, a young boy born in Mexico and moved to the United States when he was 8 years old.

From his childhood, James had a slight deformity; one of his legs was just a little shorter than the other.  He was told by his grandma he would have difficulty running, as he walked just a bit slower than his friends and classmates.  But this did not deter James from seeking out his desire to run; and run he did.  He ran with a friend every Saturday, building up his stamina and speed, and eventually joined his school’s track team.  Then the book reaches its climax on the day of the big race.  James finished second – and from there all of his family celebrated the amazing accomplishment of James.

What I enjoyed in this theme is the fact James finished in second place, rather than first.  This sets a realistic logical goal to the book’s readers, as not always being first is necessary, and to be second (given a physical deformity) is in itself a major accomplishment.  The abundance of illustrations within this book lends depth to the story with artistic attention given to James’ eyes – showing deep and focused determination.  The family is characterized with functional and loving parents and siblings.

I Was Born to Run is a grand story for the youngest of children learning to read, at an age with personal values and goals are presented to illustrate positive personality traits, and will strengthen readers’ focus to find something which pleases them, and pursue their goals – even if you have a bit of an overwhelming challenge.  The book ends with a coloring page and a word quiz, making this more than just a book, but the basis for an afternoon of fun.  So don’t walk, run – to get your own copy of this book!
