If there is one tragic fact about the current political climate, especially in America, it is that it is more divided now than it has ever been before. No matter what side of the aisle you fall on, the destructive force of division continues to plague our land, with extremism and violence becoming more and more intertwined with particular political leanings than ever before. The need to find common ground and partisanship is a fight that needs to be fought to bring back balance to our nation.

That is the topic author James J. Maiwurm discusses in the political mystery thriller, Inheritance of Crises and Dysfunction. The book follows Salt, a retired lawyer who recently lost his wife and is settling into retired life. An old friend who is set to become the new Secretary of State convinces Salt to come out of retirement, as a new administration is set to take the White House and political unrest is at an all-time high amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic. Salt must make connections around the world and help bring the United States into a position to be an ally to nations around the world.

The author did a wonderful job of crafting a wholly original and unique read. The tension could be felt in each and every page of this narrative, which really hones in on the strife between political parties in the United States and the trouble with domestic issues at the height of the pandemic. The thing which stood out in this book was the perception other countries had of the United States in recent years. Amidst our own internal struggles, our allies around the world began to take a new outlook on what has always been considered one of the most powerful nations on Earth in the last century. Salt’s journey into the political and international arena really highlighted the impact our nation has had on the world stage, and what has changed in the most recent years.

The book is perfect for those who enjoy political thrillers, especially those which incorporate elements of psychological thrillers and mystery as well. The character development really brought these elements to life for the reader, as the author gave Salt both an engaging role in the overall political climate that was being explored and an emotional role as he took on this position amidst the loss of his wife, giving the character and overall narrative a relatable tone to hang onto. This combination of rich storytelling and complex character development not only highlighted the genres perfectly, but made this a must-read novel.
