Pacific Book Review

“An act of graciousness demonstrates qualities of kindness, warm courtesy, tactfulness, mercifulness, and compassion.” This is a professional guide that centers on putting the patient first in an open and sustained engagement to respectfully and compassionately achieve the best experience and outcome for that person and their family. The guide not only looks at healthcare in the United States of America but also globally. Author Douglas A. Raisch is keen to note in his prologue that the guidelines in his book should not be used to disregard any professional medical advice.

In the first chapters, the author begins by defining the term care and the state of wellness in a patient. This distinctively looks at the psychological well-being of a patient. Is the patient feeling content? Is he/she feeling satisfied? Is he/she feeling secure? These, according to Raisch, are some of the areas that caregivers should dwell on as they are tending to patients.

It is evident that the author took his time and did a lot of research before writing this guide. The chapters have been broken down meticulously into well-explained notes that are easily understandable to readers. He makes the reader aware of what to expect in each chapter by indicating the learning objectives at every beginning. Some of the areas the book covers are: why an individual seeks healthcare services, how aging affects one’s well-being, how to deal with a dying patient and care placement.

Tables have been included in the guide to simplify and help the reader decipher the information the writer conveys. Author Raisch emphasizes that meeting Resident Patient expectations given the available resources needs to be at the forefront of every healthcare professional’s mindset. The welcoming should be both professional and have a quality of being personal as well.

There is so much to learn from this guide. It brings out the empathetic side of a reader. This would be an excellent educational tool for medical or healthcare students, staff development professionals, healthcare educators, and care facility administrators. It would especially be helpful to frontline workers during the covid-19 pandemic that has engulfed the world, to reflect upon their role and to teach methods of improving the global patient care experience.

I highly recommend Patient Centricity: Achieving Positive Patient Outcomes and Bottom Line Results A Professional Guide for Improving Healthcare Performance Levels and the Global Patient Experience to those groups mentioned, and for many others having curiosity within the health care system.
