In David L. Daum’s science fiction novel, September 2038: The Global Disaster Squad’s Finest Hour, the world is battling numerous global disasters brought on by years of ignoring the call for climate action. While these natural disasters are ravaging various parts of the world and occurring at an alarming rate, The Global Disaster Squad races to evacuate people, provide relief, rebuild, and do all that can be done to manage these catastrophes through efficient teamwork. Unfortunately, while the squad, which was established by a visionary’s desire for world peace and global cooperation, is doing the best it can, given that these disasters occur almost daily, it is soon faced with a catastrophe unlike any it has ever experienced.

The deadliest hurricanes the world has ever witnessed are closing in from the east and the west. Preparations have been made, but once they close in, the squad is hit with casualty figures never before recorded, and they realize they need all the help they can get if they hope to survive. Will The Global Disaster Squad prevail and pull the world out of another tragedy, or will they crumble?

The book paints horrifyingly graphic pictures about the possible chaotic state of the world in 2038, and beyond, if climate actions aren’t intensified. It is a call to action to take climate change seriously that shouldn’t be ignored. I like the subtle geography lessons incorporated in the book, as the characters’ backgrounds and the different locations the team is monitoring and assisting are discussed. The inclusion of characters from all continents shows that a collective effort is required to address climate change, and this is another nice aspect of the book.

The narration is engaging and will keep readers on the edge of their seats, with anticipation and longing for the squad to prevail. It is heart-wrenching to see the world depicted in such a state of chaos and perpetual pain and loss brought on by the refusal to take the warning signs Earth has been giving seriously. It is also heart-warming to see the persistence and dedication of brave souls trying to save the planet and refusing to give up.

“September 2038: The Global Disaster Squad’s Finest Hour” is a potent and enlightening book that everyone needs to read for an in-depth understanding of the gravity of climate change and the danger the world is heading toward if serious steps aren’t taken quickly.
