The idea of romance has changed as we, as a civilization, have evolved. Some people view romance as the story of true love, the stuff legends and fairy tales are made of, where two people find one another against impossible odds and live happily ever after. Others view romance as a partnership, a joining of two people and two households as they forge a new path together rather than apart. For many however, romance is far more complex than that, and even the strongest of relationships experience both highs and lows in the romance they feel.

In author Ivan Bosanko’s The Rubber Room: Volume 2, the author continues the story of Katey and Jerry, a couple in the 1950s who are experiencing the three C’s of romance: change, commitment, and challenges. Through troubled times, no matter how bad things got or how difficult their relationship became, the two always found their way back towards one another. However, that all is about to be challenged. When a vindictive CEO tries to oust Jerry from his job, including using physical threats, their happy life together begins to show cracks. They must work together not only to save their own company, but overcome the ultimate test of love.

The author valiantly shows a depth of human expression through this story. Rather than shy away from the challenges which relationships face, the author shows both the good and the ugly side of romance, as two individuals with their own viewpoints on life must come together to forge their relationship in the fires of change. The exploration of both protagonists as individuals was a great way to explore this relationship, as we see their differences and similarities coming together exceptionally. From their differing beliefs that drove them apart in volume 1, to the levels of commitment they see their relationship in and how outside forces impact their bond, this is an expertly crafted narrative.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy romance novels, especially those with an historical fiction bend and a heap of intrigue and drama. The imagery the author’s writing provided really brought this period of time to life perfectly, and the heavy atmosphere their tumultuous journey brought them on, made this a heart-pounding reading experience.

Memorable, heartfelt, and engaging, author Ivan Bosanko’s The Rubber Room: Volume 2 is a must-read romance and historical fiction read. The twists and turns in the narrative and the relationship that builds, ebbs and flows throughout this time period made this a truly compelling read.
